In November of 2008 New Life was contacted via letter inviting us to build relationships with a group of residents at the Indian River Juvenile Correctional Facility in Stark County.
Indian River Juvenile Correctional Facility (IRJCF) is located at intersection of routes 21 and 30, near Massillon Ohio. IRJCF's general population consists of males between the ages of 12 and 21 years old.
The mission of IRJCF is to maintain a safe, secure, humane and industrious environment that promotes real life situations to assist youth in developing skills needed to be productive citizens. Three units have specialized programming that address substance abuse, sexual offending and mental health needs. Programs available to all youth include education, social, psychological, religious, and recreation services. This is an opportunity for those of us at New Life, who sense God's calling toward this ministry, to begin to build bridges to a segment of our mission field. We are hopeful that those bridges will lead people to the Cross. This ministry may include the following-
- one on one mentoring
- "adoption" of a particular unit
- participation in some type of worship service
- volunteering 2-3 hours every 3 months- spending more time would be appreciated
- we would visit the same unit every time we go
- when spending time with these young men, we would be teaching them about Christ, mentoring, encouraging positive change, etc.
- our goal is to be a positive, outside influence
Thus far, 3 people have expressed a desire to participate, with one other person currently in prayerful consideration.
We are currently waiting on the Lord regarding this ministry opportunity. Please pray with us as we ask the Lord's direction in this important potential ministry.
If you would like to partner with us in this ministry, please contact Doc Johnson at shjohnson@malone.edu.
